Easter Morning

I know, I know. I'm a little late to be posting about Easter. But I have an excuse. Two, really. They are my children and it's all I can do to keep up with them and find some time for myself and my husband. I do sometimes remember to take the camera, and occasionally I actually use it, and every great once-in-a-while I find time to download the pictures. Today was just such a day.
We were at home for Easter, which we celebrated a day early because I wanted to drive back home on Easter and wanted the boys to already have their new toys. Matthew got to do a mini egg-hunt in the lilies at Nana's house and then went with her and Pepaw to a big egg-hunt at the park. I went shopping that morning, which makes me sound like a horrible mama until you understand that I had been parenting round the clock, literally, for the whole week. I was beat.
The boys wore their matching outfits, which their Grandma gets kudos for gifting and I get kudos for remembering to pack. They looked so cute and I wanted so much to get a picture of them together. But I could not get Matthew to look at the camera with a normal expression again once he learned that the Easter eggs contained candies of different sorts. It probably would have been fine if I had just let him open the eggs and consume the contents. But I'm a mean mom and I tapped them all shut - except for one - and I told him that he could open them later.

That just let to an utter fixation with the small plastic orbs. At some point, I realized that he was kissing, licking, and attempting to eat the eggs whole (reference the picture below), so I put a stop to the whole thing and made him put the eggs down. But I did take a mental note and on the 9+ hour drive home the next day, I smartly used the eggs as bribes for good behavior. All in all, I think it was a good holiday, though I never did get an acceptable picture of the two boys together. I guess I'll do things differently next year!

Bath Time

Every night, the boys take a bath together. They love it. At least, I think they love it. There's usually not too much whining from the older one and the younger one comes running (er, crawling) when he hears the bath water running. There are almost always bubbles involved.
And links. Buzz loves his links. Oh, and his name is Buzz, now. I'm not sure when that happened, but he went from Baby Brother to Chuckles (because of all the chucking he was doing, dontcha know) to Buzz. Since I'm not a big fan of the nickname Billy, I'm happy that the name that seems to have stuck is Buzz. Plus it's the name of an famous astronaut, so it can't be bad.
William loves to play in the water. He splashes around and doesn't mind at all when he gets this face all wet. (Not so for Matthew.) His very favorite is when someone pours water so that he can try to grab it. He's always confused, but never deterred, when he isn't actually able to grasp the stream of water.
Because Matthew is the best big brother ever, and is very capable of doing things "by his own", he often does the pouring himself. Sometimes he misses and just douses Buzz, but usually he does it just right. William loves the attention and I love that they are moving one step closer to true "play".
But, of course, things aren't always so idyllic. Right before this picture, Matthew had ripped the foam H out of his brothers mouth saying, "That's not for eating!", then promptly put it in his own mouth and then gave his whimpering brother a bear hug. There's nothing like a toddler to mirror behavior and, knowing that, I'm a little worried about the message I'm sending with my parenting....

Pappy's Visit

Pappy came to visit this month and the boys had a ball. They LOVE their Pappy. He makes funny faces and rude noises and Matthew thinks he's about the best thing since sliced bread. He even babysat for us one night, which makes him the best thing since sliced bread in my book, too!

Matthew wasn't really feeling this photo shoot, so you should not take his furrowed brow as a sign of much, other than his frustration at being made to sit for a photo shoot! He's happiest these days in his sandbox which was purchased by Nana & Peter, filled with sand by Grandma & Grandpa, and outfitted with toys by Pappy. His favorite is the dump truck that says, "Caterpillar Power" and then makes construction sounds. Excellent.

William is this close to walking and he's pulling up on everything he can reach to get in more practice time. He's the jolliest little boy I've ever seen and now that he's mobile, I think he's even happier. Mobility and real food. There's nothing like chewing your own pears to make a baby feel like he's moving up in the world.

Check out the side bar for a few new videos, too!

Holidays Holidays

After the end-of-the-year holidays are over, another round of first-of-the-year holidays start for us. We get a few weeks off in January, though we did attend the MLK Day parade this year in St. Petersburg and danced to some awesome bands, but then it's back to celebrating. February 14th this year saw the confluence of three major holidays in our house: Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, and Joe Cain Day.
So we made valentines and had strawberry pancakes for breakfast, then we went to a Chinese buffet for lunch and on to a Lion Dance to feed him some money and get our good luck. Then we came home and ate, well, I can't remember what we ate for dinner, but I'm sure it was something Mardi-Grasish to honor the memory of Joe Cain, who is credited with reviving Mardi Gras in Mobile after the Civil War.

On Mardi Gras Day, we made jambalaya and had a potluck at the park with the other mommies at kids. Then Jeff's parents arrived that night and we celebrated with gumbo and king cake. Matthew got the baby, so I think he's going to host the party next year.

William is really developing fast these days. Two weeks ago, he figured out how to crawl. Last week, he learned to pull up. And this week, I'm teaching him to do the laundry, which is important for him because when he finishes a meal, he's just covered with food. Matthew was such a clean eater by comparison. William insists on feeding himself for much of the meal, so there's no way I can keep things clean.

Our favorite new toy is the bike trailer, which allows Jeff and I to ride bikes (together!) for the first time in years. The boys like it, too, and often Matthew can be heard reading his brother a story during the ride. Matthew is the best big brother a baby could ask for. Though he has a bad habit of removing toys from William's reach, he also makes sure that William has something to play with and he is the first to say, "What's wrong, Baby Buzz?" when William frets.

Six Months

It's been over six months now since William was born. He weighs over 22 pounds and is, oh, many inches tall. I'm supposed to remember those things, but his appointment was last Friday morning and since then a lot has happened. Jeff's been on duty a lot lately with the Haiti relief effort, Matthew has developed pink-eye and some awful sinus infection that makes him look like he has slugs crawling out of his nose and the most inoppurntune moments (think grocery store dairy section), and we took our first family vacation. It wasn't much, but it was nice for us: an evening drive over the Skyway Bridge down to Bradenton to dine at the Crab Trap. We didn't really know where we were headed, but we were just so excited about the thought of being able to put the kids in the car and drive (Matthew would NEVER have allowed us to do this without regrets).

Just a few notes about dining at the Crab Trap: the think it's a fancy restaurant, so don't plan on getting seated if you have toddlers and/or infants in tow. And if you order the spinach salad, make sure you ask for the dressing on the side because the warm bacon goop that they call dressing can quickly undo any positive effects the spinach might be having on your arteries. And order applesause for dessert - the four snowbirds sitting next to us did and they raved about it. We were not encouraged to stay for dessert and left quickly, thanking the god of children that ours were well-behaved. Matthew did especially well, given the circumstances, and we're just so pleased every day that he's our boy to raise. What good fortune!

And let's not forget about Little William, who is the unsung hero of the whole family. It is his ready smile and easy demeanor that make everything we're doing these days possible. Jeff and I spend a lot of our time whipping this house into shape, but we wouldn't be doing anything but surviving if William was the infant Matthew was. We're different parents, too, I suppose, and Matthew has grown into a fantastic little boy, so I'm certainly not complaining about how things were. But I'm just so grateful that William is the baby he is. He's learning to crawl now, so I'll be eating these "easy baby" words soon, I'm sure. Whereas Matthew was an observant, critical baby, I think William will be more inquisitive and busy. He grabs everything he can, and reaches for anything he can't. He pulls my hair, and Big Brother's, and is convinced that one of these days he will catch Matthew on the back-swing at the park.
