Smart Boy

Last night, Jeff was rearranging Matthew's room and Matthew was throwing things into the air and screaming because his father was distracted. Then, Matthew grabbed his toy microphone, stood up straight, and said the Pledge of Allegiance. And not just, "I pledge allegiance to the flag, dabba dabba do" as you might expect from a two year old. He actually said the whole thing, including "indivisible" which he tripped over but did eventually get out in its entirety.

He must have learned it at school, but I didn't think they made two year olds pledge allegiance to the flag. Jeff thought I taught it to him, but come on, do I really have time to do that? I teach him things like, "Goodness gracious, you've made a mess" and "I'm sick of your whining". You know, everyday conversation with an almost-two-and-a-half year old. Matthew amazes me with his speaking ability and memory. (Like when he says, "Watch me do this trick reeeeally fast, okay?") But I praise him most for trying again when he fails because persistence will get you a lot further in life than a smart mouth. (I know this for a fact.)

Baby William blossomed in the last two weeks. He now sits up like a real boy, pivots all over the place on his big belly, and grabs (or tries to) everything he sees. He's especially good at getting his hands on the cell phone, big boy toys that Matthew has left on the floor, and the spoon heading for his mouth. Oh, and did I mention that he's enormous? He's over 20 pounds of baby now at just under 6 months. We'll get the complete stats at our 6 month appointment, but my back can attest to his size. Anyone who might have been holding out hope that we might have another baby can put all those fears (I mean, dreams) to rest. I'm not strong enough to have another one.

I'll try to post some pictures from Christmas and the past few weeks, but let's not hold our breath. Happy New Year!

Christmas Program

Today was the Christmas program at school. Matthew was great. The first time we saw him, he was leading the charge into the church. What a ham! He just loves music these days and he fills the back seat with Christmas melodies, albeit a bit reinterpreted. He especially likes to sing, "Up on the housetop reindeer, up on the housetop reindeer, click click click. Reindeer."
He danced during a lot of the program. Well, at least when he wasn't sitting down. He didn't sing a word until the very end when they all sang Jingle Bells. Of course, he started singing as soon as he was handed his bells, so he finished early. He was so sweet and oblivious and wonderful. I was proud of him for the calm, quiet boy he was during the chaos of the program that was scheduled for our usual nap time.
I've uploaded all the videos off the camera (only a total of five), so you should be able to see them soon in the sidebar, or on the list down below. Before the program, we went to a spaghetti lunch at the airport where Santa was supposed to arrive by helicopter, but since he was an hour late, we missed him. Isn't that just like Santa to not come until you've given up and gone off to bed?

William was a rock star today, as usual. He is such an easy baby in so many ways that Matthew wasn't. And yet, he's challenging us in ways that Matthew didn't. You'd never know it from his 19 pound, 5 month old body, but he only wants to eat when conditions are just so. But he doesn't make much fuss about hunger, so it's hard to complain. I'm happy to be starting solid food with him, soon, though. I'd much rather leave the eating up to him. Bring on finger foods!
Tomorrow is William's 5 month birthday, and we couldn't be happier watching our boys grow. William is just in love with his big brother, laughing and smiling whenever he's around. And Matthew is looking forward to the time with Baby Broza can play hold his hand while they walk to school together and share a bath. I just hope these little ones grow up to be as pleasant and genuine as their father. If they're anything like him, they'll be good men.

Caught Up

As of this afternoon, I am officially caught up on all things technological. Three months of pictures and videos (check out the new videos on the sidebar) have been downloaded, uploaded, and unloaded from the camera. I'm finding time for a blog post, even, which I find I rarely even yearn for, given that my time is so limited.

Blogging isn't the only thing I've caught up on in the last few days as the angel baby has sleep through the night for the past two nights! I'm not talking the 5-6 hours of sleep that pediatricians call "sleeping through the night" when they're trying to make the parents of poorly sleeping infants feel better about their lot. I'm talking, twelve hours of sleep in a row without minding the pool of pee he was sleeping in or the early rising toddler who screamed his way through breakfast. Of course, because I'm spilling the beans on all this, he'll never do it again. But catching up on some sleep was so sugary sweet that I couldn't omit it from a recounting of the day's happenings.

Speaking of sweet, Buster Brown is like cute on a stick, but he's a two year old now and won't be cuddled for any amount of money, or candy. He's all about his papa these days, which is probably because his papa doesn't watch him like a hawk and comment every moment that he's nearing a potential hazard, or eyeing something he's not allowed to have. I've got to loosen up, and though the sleep is no-doubt helping, I'm just not feeling myself these days. I'm sure part of the reason is that there's a lot more of me to feel and I'm frustrated with how slowly the pounds are coming off. To manage my frustration, I find some peaceful moments with a cup of green tea and a brownie/cookie/chocolate. I don't know what the problem could be with my diet. Isn't green tea supposed to be good for weight loss?
